Palm Island resort vacations - something really special
Tranquillity reigns at this all-inclusive resort with its five white-sand beaches. The old Palm Island Beach Club was completely razed to the ground and rebuilt in 1999. This exclusive and remote retreat has come a long way since its founder, John Caldwell ("Coconut Johnny"), began planting palms here to give the island a lush, tropical look. Now under new developers, the posh retreat consists of a cluster of 40 units contained in 22 Caribbean cottages. Bedrooms capture the spirit of The Grenadines, occupying both standard guest rooms and "tree houses," each with ceiling fans, custom-designed bamboo and rattan furnishings, colorful balconies or patios opening onto the view, shower-and-tub bathrooms, and bathrobes. The romantic tree houses have high-peaked ceilings, breezy balconies, and four-poster bamboo beds. In addition to the regular accommodations, the Plantation House boasts four bedrooms, each with queen-size beds. Children are allowed April 2 to January 2. Good-quality cuisine is served in the Sunset Grill and Bar and the Royal Palm Restaurant with specialties from the Caribbean, the U.S., and Europe. One guest wrote, "If you don't dig the vittles here, you can rent a boat for the night to take you over to Union Island or else crack open a coconut." Chances are you won't have to do either, as the cuisine is great. From the pink grapefruit with honey-rum sauce that begins breakfast to the coconut mousse that completes dinner, you dine "high on the hog," as the chef says. Room service must be scheduled 24 hours in advance at the front desk since there are no phones in the room. Facilities include 2 restaurants; 2 bars; outdoor pool; tennis court; fitness room; fishing; marina; snorkeling; windsurfing; bikes; laundry service; nonsmoking rooms. Rates for Palm Island Resort Hotel Rooms are all inclusive, and include Roundtrip Airfare via Barbados on stays of seven nights or longer; breakfast, lunch and dinner daily; all beverages including premium liquors, Caribbean beer, tropical coolers, house wines by the glass and soft drinks; early morning coffee, afternoon tea, and evening hour hors d'oeuvres; tennis, table tennis, horseshoes, putting green and croquet; windsurfing, sunfish sailing, snorkeling, and kayaking with equipment and instructions; TV room; exercise equipment; and all taxes and service charges.
