Palm Island sailing - an unique experience
Yachting is the great attraction of the Grenadines and boats come from all over the world to sail these blue waters. Chartering a boat is a great way to see the islands and you can arrange day sails on a variety of boats. There are also catamarans and schooners with daily visits to Mustique, the Tobago Cays and the Falls of Baleine among other destinations. If you are on Bequia for the Bequia Easter Regatta, you could possibly join in the crewing of one of the racing yachts. Also on Bequia there are water taxis who will take you from one spot on the island to another (but always wait to pay the operator when he returns for you!) Day trips can be organized to the Tobago Cays, Mayreau, Petit Tabac, Palm Island Union Island, Petit St. Vincent, Morpion, Mustique and Bequia from Canouan. Union Island is half an hour's sail from Palm Island. The "cross-roads" of the Grenadines, this mountainous island has a good anchorage at Clifton Harbor, home of the Anchorage Yacht Club. This is where yachtsmen can take on water, fuel and provisions and also where they can complete Customs and Immigration formalities if heading down to Carriacou and Grenada. The Tobago Cays are an hour's sail from Palm Island. To many people, this marine park represents the high spot of the Grenadines. The uninhabited Cays comprise numerous islets and coves, protected by some of the most spectacular coral reefs in the world. You can sail, snorkel or beach-comb in complete seclusion in this rare tropical paradise, accessible only by boat. Excellent moorings are available. "The hundreds of tiny islands, that make up the Grenadines, sprinkled across 60 miles of the southern Caribbean, are among the world's great cruising grounds. There is rarely more than a morning's sail between islands, and most have protected anchorages on the western or leeward side. They provide their own pattern for a journey - morning departures, midday anchorages, afternoon exploring and an evening laze. Yachts have been coming here for decades, and most islands now have all the services you could hope for” - Adam Nicolson, Islands Magazine, October 1994.
